2006 WOW Award Recipients

bullet ArizonaStateUniversity – IDEAL: Integrated Data to Enhance Arizona's Learning.  In partnership with the Arizona Department of Education, this web-based learning environment offers access to online courses, tutorials, and communications to teachers and students throughout the state.  IDEAL is a model of cooperation and community connectivity.

bullet California StateUniversity, Office of the Chancellor - Math Success and English Success Websites.California high school students use the engaging tools on these interactive websites to meet CSU Math and English placement requirements and to better prepare for college level work.

bullet CochiseCollege - Serving Deaf Student Needs.  When faculty learned of the inability of deaf students to use a new web-based conferencing system, they developed innovative and inexpensive solutions for deaf students to participate in these courses.

bullet University of Washington – Catalyst.  Catalyst meets the daily demands of teaching, learning, and research through innovative and effective technologies and services. Bucking the trend of using off-the-shelf software, Catalyst’s Learning Spaces, Web Tools, and Knowledge Services were developed by tapping the expertise of faculty, students, and staff to meet campus-wide needs. 

For its work in addressing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the members of the WCET Awards Committee also decided to create the first “WOW Humanitarian and Leadership Award” which was given to:

bullet Southern Regional Education Board – Sloan Semester.  A complete “virtual” institution was created and was operational within 21 days.  It’s free online courses and services, resulted from generous support of the Sloan Foundation and institutions throughout the country.  The initiative created an academic “bridge” for students to continue their studies and to return to their home institution in the Spring term.

2005 WOW Award Recipients

bullet MarylandOnline:  Quality Matters. To assure the continuous quality improvement of online courses, a consortium of institutions partnered to create an inter-institutional faculty-driven, collegial peer course review process.

bullet University of Arizona:  Online Nursing PhD Program. Responding to the critical shortage of Nursing faculty, the University created the first fully-online Nursing PhD program to be offered by a research-intensive university.

bullet University of CaliforniaCollege Prep:  CyberTutor Program. Hundreds of high school students have received immediate online academic assistance in their homework assignments, exam preparation, and college application process through this program that employs undergraduates from University of California campuses as tutors.

bullet University of Phoenix:  rEsource - An Incubator for Digital Education Innovation. To assist students in conducting academic research and completing course assignments, the University of Phoenix created a unique set of digital tools (eBooks, simulations, and virtual organizations) that serve students regardless of location.

bullet University of Texas System TeleCampus:  TRACK - TAKS Readiness and Core Knowledge. Texas students preparing to take the 11th grade exit exam can participate in a free online test readiness tool containing diagnostics and learning materials in four subject areas.   More than 45,000 students accessed this tool in preparation for the 2005 exam.

2004 WOW Award Recipients

bullet Colorado Community Colleges Online for its “Online E-learning Quality Assurance” Manual. To assure that the quality of distance education continually improves, the manual is a set of comprehensive processes and procedures by which courses, programs, and faculty training are developed and evaluated.

bullet Minnesota State Colleges and Universities for Minnesota Online's eStudent Services. In partnership with WCET, they created a student service “audit tool” that assists institutions in identifying web-based student services that could be improved. It also provides strategies for improving those services.

bullet University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for its course “¡A su salud! Spanish for Health Professionals”. Translated as “to your health!”, “¡A su salud!” tackles the growing need for working health care professionals to improve their Spanish language skills. The multimedia format includes video segments, a dramatic telenovela storyline format, interviews with native speakers, and other interactive tools.

bullet University of North Dakota for its Distance Engineering Undergraduate Degree Program. UND's program is the only distance engineering degree program to offer online bachelor of science degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering to be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
